Overview
This case study looks at how SimplyMedia took a low-authority real estate and travel brand with very few backlinks and, over about 10 months, grew its organic traffic more than 11 times over, more than doubled its Domain Rating, and got it appearing across every major AI search platform after starting from nothing.
Most case studies show a known brand getting bigger. This one is different. The site had almost no trust signals to work with when we started, so the campaign had to build authority from the ground up rather than amplify what was already there. It also did this on a smaller monthly package.
To protect client confidentiality, private identifiers (including the exact domain) have been removed. All metrics reflect real performance tracked using industry-standard SEO tools.
Client Snapshot
- Industry: Real Estate & Travel (holiday letting)
- Engagement Start: August 2025
- Service: HARO Link Building
- Package Size: Starter Package
- Primary Goal: Build topical authority and organic visibility for a site with a thin link profile and a low Domain Rating.
Starting Point (August 2025)
The site had a usable foundation but almost no authority. That combination makes it very hard to rank for anything competitive, and even harder to get picked up by AI search.
- Organic Traffic: 473 per month
- Domain Rating (DR): 12
- Referring Domains: around 60
- AI Search Presence: none. The site did not appear in any AI assistant responses.
SimplyMedia Strategy
With a low DR and a thin backlink profile, chasing volume would have looked unnatural and done very little. We focused on earning relevant editorial HARO links at a steady pace so authority could build up over time.
The Challenge
A low-authority domain gives journalists very little to work with. There is no track record to point to and no obvious reason to feature it. To win placements a DR-12 site would not normally get, we built credible expert positioning around the brand’s real estate and travel knowledge, then pitched that into the home, garden, lifestyle, and property stories journalists were already writing.
What We Did
- Earned editorial HARO links from real publications, placed inside genuine articles
- Put relevance and editorial fit ahead of raw link count
- Built links at a steady pace to keep the growth curve natural
- Combined broad lifestyle expert quotes with on-niche real estate and travel PR, including regional Lake District coverage tied directly to the brand
Links Built
We landed 248 editorial links and brand mentions over the campaign.
Because HARO placements get syndicated across major networks, those efforts grew into 575 backlinks (up 542) from 302 referring domains (up 290). A single placement in a publication like Yahoo or the Daily Mail often gets republished across AOL, MSN, and a long list of regional titles, which is why the link count climbs faster than the number of placements.
Notable Placements
- The Wall Street Journal (Buyside)
- Mansion Global
- The Telegraph
- Daily Mail / This Is Money
- New York Magazine (The Strategist)
- Yahoo
- AOL
- MSN
- HuffPost
- Southern Living
- Homes & Gardens
- Apartment Therapy
- Ideal Home
- Family Handyman
- GB News
- Yorkshire Post
Results (June 2026)

After about 10 months of steady link building, the gains were significant, which is especially notable given how low the starting point was.
SEO Growth
- Organic Traffic: 5,271 per month, up from 473. That is a 1,014% increase, or more than 11 times the traffic.
- Domain Rating (DR): 25, up 13 points. More than double where it started.
- Referring Domains: 302, up 290
- Backlinks: 575, up 542.
AI Search Visibility (From Zero)
A year ago the site appeared in no AI search results at all. Today it shows up across every major AI assistant:
| Platform | Responses |
| Google AI Mode | 16 |
| AI Overviews | 15 |
| Grok | 14 |
| Gemini | 9 |
| Perplexity | 7 |
| ChatGPT | 5 |
| Copilot | 2 |
This is one of the clearest signs of how the campaign paid off. AI systems lean on authoritative editorial mentions when they decide which sources to cite, and this site went from invisible to citable across the board.
Why This Worked
HARO links work well for a low-authority site for a few reasons. They come from real journalists and publications that competitors cannot easily copy. They carry relevance and editorial context rather than just a link. They get syndicated across major media networks, so one placement can travel a long way. And they signal trust and expertise to both Google and AI search systems.
For a site starting at DR 12, that combination did what volume never could. It turned an unknown domain into a credible, cited source, all on a Starter Package.
Key Takeaway
You do not need an established brand to win. The right links build authority from scratch.
This case study shows how SimplyMedia helps newer and lower-authority sites grow organic traffic from a near-zero base (here, 1,014% in about 10 months), more than double Domain Rating with relevant editorial links, and earn visibility in AI-powered search, where more and more discovery is heading.
Real editorial links, from real publications. No PBNs, no shortcuts.
